Our first 5-day "Launch into Languages"
program at the University of Adelaide was a great success for all concerned so were planning another one!
Check out some participant feedback here and hereand here . (Thanks to the Robertson/White family for prompt action on the feedback request!).
The new one will be held in Woolongong (exact venue still being decided) from September 23rd-27th 2011 from 9am to 3pm, and all home-schoolers and other familes interested in learning a first fluent foreign language together are invited.
A limited number of places are also available for teachers and pre-service teachers, interested in using the program in their classes to participate, free of charge.
This is a unique opportunity to expand your repertoire so that you can provide all 8 KLA's for your primary classroom.
Registration of only $200 per family (yes, really!) even includes a complimentary copy of the brand-new "Talking to the Whole Wide World" resource kit ($100 value) which will see parents and children through to fluent bilingualism together in around 100 hours.
This is being priced VERY cheaply this year in order to get a really dynamic group of families involved and create a core community of bilingual families who can support and encourage each other here in Australia, as well as using it to make intercultural friendships around the world.
The course is based on the language apprenticeship strategy, which is a new approach recommended by Australia's foremost languages expert Prof Joe Lo Bianco (who wrote Australia's language policy). The apprenticeship language used is Esperanto, the simplest and most intercultural language in the world. This provides an early experience of success, contact with children in nearly 100 diverse cultures and an excellent basis for the learning of other languages later.
The course consists of 40 "weekly" themes, and we will cover about one per day, depending on the age and character of the participants. Each "week" includes a main lesson in the form of an interactive discussion with the group (up to one hour- maybe split into two sessions). Each covers a big useful chunk of language understanding like "letters", "words", "sentences", "adjectives", "plurals" or "tenses". The concept is applied to Esperanto but comparison with English and other languages is included and welcomed, according to interest.
Each "week" (day, in our case) also includes an intercultural investigation, a song or poem to learn and record (some karaoke fun here for those that way inclined!), games to reinforce the new concept and vocabulary, creative activities and consolidation.
Parents, teens and children will be treated as individual students unless special needs require different arrangements.
By the end of the week, participants will have mastered a novel alphabet to spell and pronounce any Esperanto word correctly, be able to identify the part of speech of most words, count, introduce themselves, understand a few phrases (hello, come in, sit down, how are you?, yes/no, great!, stand up, your turn, congratulations!, read aloud, thank you, goodbye!...), ask and answer simple questions and use common courtesy expressions and will be fully equipped to keep going to fluent bilingualism
We'll send you a cute PDF book on registration, so you have something to help you anticipate the Launch!
