What is stopping kids from becoming bilingual at your primary school?

We told Source Bottle that we're interested in stories from teachers, principals, parents and kids who would like to be achieving more in LOTE (languages Other Than English) education and can identify some factors which are blocking the way.

Liat Harrower gave us our first response today - thanks Liat!

Here's her story:
Our primary school had a Japanese LOTE teacher and the kids loved learning the language. She took parental leave and the school was unable to find a replacement. Now after 4 years without any LOTE teacher, we are told there is not enough funding to have both LOTE AND Performing Arts programs (ie Language AND Drama) - which was fine while we actually had a dedicated P/A teacher, but funding stopped for that 12 months ago.

It is not fair that the children at Liat's school have not had the opportunity to learn a second language for so long and Mondeto is glad to help by offering a full 20% discount on a copy of the resource kit  "Talking to the Whole Wide World" for every class in the school, so they can enjoy getting bilingual and making friends in dozens of different cultures.

Congratulations, Liat, we hope that you get to enjoy the adventure with your own class!
